Approaching Diabetes The Ayurvedic Way

 

Diabetes, also known as ‘Madhumeh’ in Ayurveda, is a metabolic disorder characterized by an increase in blood sugar levels. Based on Ayurveda, diabetes can occur due to Avarana, which is the blockage of channels in the body, and Dhatukshaya, which is the depletion of tissues in the body. Moreover, it can be genetic and acquired due to an unhealthy lifestyle. A sedentary way of living has become more common these days eventually leading to obesity, diabetes, and a lot of other health issues. Ultimately, diabetes is caused due to the lack of insulin production or the body not responding to the insulin produced. However, following an Ayurvedic diet, and a healthy lifestyle, significantly helps in the prevention and treatment of diabetes.

Diabetes, irrespective of its types, is identified by indications like increased thirst and hunger, excessive urination, sudden weight loss, fatigue, blurry vision, and slow healing of cuts and wounds. Further, blood tests on sugar levels help in the diagnosis of the disease. Regarding the prevention and treatment of diabetes, certain factors like diet, sleep, stress, and physical activities are to be considered. And Ayurveda has been a one-stop solution in balancing those factors for centuries. Besides, Ayurveda is known for its holistic healing and its gentleness in individuals, unlike allopathy.

As per Ayurveda, a balance in the three fundamental doshas, Vata, Pitta, and, Kapha ensures good health. Also, Agni or digestive fire is to be present for a perfect metabolism. Ayurveda does it all with a diet which incorporates a range of herbs, and, spices consequently helping in the management of diabetes. The diet advocates the balanced use of turmeric, garlic, ginger, neem, amla, aloe vera, bitter gourd, cinnamon, cardamom, etc, in the foods and drinks one consume. An ayurvedic detox enhances the effectiveness of such a diet by eliminating toxins and improving absorption. Besides, avoiding junk, fried, and, sugary foods is advised. Not to mention, alcohol consumption, and, smoking is to be avoided.

Furthermore, stress management and a good night’s sleep is essential for treating diabetes. This is where Ayurveda massages and therapies come to the rescue. Ayurvedic treatments are a great way to reduce stress and to improve sleep. Meditation too can help relieve stress and insomnia. Moreover, physical activity is vital in managing diabetes as lack of exercises is one of the driving causes of diabetes. Walking, jogging, or running, based on one’s preference, is sufficient to stay active. Besides, Yoga is a perfect exercise that integrates physical and mental activities. Adopting it in one’s daily lifestyle is recommended as it can assist in combating diabetes.

In brief, as it is said, ‘Prevention is better than cure’. And Ayurveda if incorporated into one’s lifestyle, is capable of preventing diabetes to a great extent. Also, it is efficient in managing diabetes as well. However, an ayurvedic consultation with a certified ayurvedic practitioner is recommended, beforehand. It helps in determining one’s body type, and to customize an ayurvedic remedy accordingly.
